FOLLOW THE LINE
There is a line running through everything we do at Maiden Avalon.
We call it our line-age.
It is the line that carries ancestral craft from one pair of working hands to the next. The line drawn across paper as we use geometry to draft a pattern. The clothesline that changes with the seasons. The bloodline connecting generations and the different needs of our bodies. The lines of warp and weft that cross one another until individual threads become cloth.
Some lines are inherited. Some we learn to draw for ourselves. Others cross, tangle, disappear and unexpectedly meet again.
Over decades of working with textiles, I have come to see these lines as part of something larger - our Sacred Threads.
They connect the animal in the field to the fibre in our hands. The maker to the material. Pattern to proportion. Clothing to the body. Craft to livelihood. Teacher to student. Mother to child. Past generations to those still coming.
Even a clothing line becomes more interesting when we follow it backwards: Who made it? What was it made from? Why was it shaped this way? What purpose did it serve? What knowledge was required before it could exist?
And then we can follow the line forward.
What will we make? What will we wear? What will we teach? What will we carry with us - and what will we pass down the line?
This is the evolving line-age of Maiden Avalon.
